Basketball fans, and Michael Jordan fans in particular, don’t skimp on whatever outfit the iconic Chicago Bulls number 23 wore during his career.

If a few months ago 2.2 million dollars was paid for the red and black Air Jordans that the player wore in the second half of the 1998 NBA Finals second game, known as the “Last Dance”, now it has reached 1.5 million for the jacket he wore while standing in podium at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics final after the “Dream Team” won the gold medal.

This garment auction, conducted by Sotheby’s, begins in May. It was estimated that it could sell for 1 million dollars, but eventually exceeded that figure.

The jacket has been in the hands of Brian McIntyre, a former NBA public relations executive, for more than three decades.

“I’m enjoying it and it’s the perfect time to auction it. It’s easier to do this than to leave it to my kids,” McIntyre said before the bidding began.

Jordan, who signed an exclusive contract with Nike in 1984, did not wear the jacket because it was made by Reebok. The US Olympic Committee told him he had to wear it to the gold medal presentation.

Jordan agreed, but walked up to the podium with the US flag on his shoulder to hide the Reebok logo.

When Jordan stepped off the podium, he took off his jacket and threw it away. He then gave it to McIntyre. Two years later, McIntyre wanted to return it, but Jordan refused to accept the jacket back.

He signed it, “Dear Brian, thanks for everything, Michael Jordan.” Now, 29 years later, McIntyre has sold it for $1,512,000.
