In the midst of such a busy agenda, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir claimed that his party had compromised with League 1 clubs. They agreed not to stop the league during the AFF U-23 Cup and the 2022 Asian Games because these competitions were not PSSI’s priority.

“Yesterday I met with League 1, as agreed at the beginning indeed for the U-23 AFF and Asian Games, League 1 does not stop,” said Erick Thohir to the media crew at the Kemenpora Building, Friday (7/7/2023).

“Because indeed from the conversation at that time with Coach Shin Tae-yong and Coach Indra Sjafri, we made this (competition) an intermediate target. And we also may not have aspirations of our League 1 to be the best in Southeast Asia, but this year the league stop completely,” he added.

Instead, League 1 2023/2024 will stop before the end of December 2023. This is done in order to provide an opportunity for the senior national team squad to be able to take part in the training camp (TC) ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup.

“League 1 has given the national team an opportunity in December. The league has stopped starting December 20 because there is a training camp in Turkey for three weeks, before preparations for the AFC Asian Championship for the senior team in Doha in January,” said the Ketum of PSSI.
