Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights, Regulates the Problem of Google and Sharing Revenues with Media Companies

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – President Jokowi officially signs the Presidential Regulation regarding Publisher Rights. This regulation, said Jokowi, is intended to support quality journalism while ensuring the sustainability of the national media industry.

In the regulations signed by Jokowi on February 20 2024, namely Presidential Decree Number 32 of 2024 concerning the Responsibility of Digital Platform Companies to Support Quality Journalism, there are regulations regarding collaboration between digital platform companies and press companies.

The digital platforms in question include internet companies Google, Facebook, and others.

In chapter 3 concerning cooperation between the two parties, especially in article 7, it is stated that cooperation between digital platform companies and press companies is stated through an agreement.

The form of cooperation between the two parties can be in the form of a paid license, profit sharing, sharing aggregate data of news users, or other agreed forms.

The third part of article 7 explains that the profit sharing referred to is the distribution of income from the use of news by digital platform companies produced by press companies based on economic value calculations.

Furthermore, article 8 of the Presidential Decree regulates the resolution of disputes between the two parties, namely digital platforms and press companies.

Where, the parties individually or jointly can submit legal remedies outside the general court in the form of arbitration or alternative dispute resolution.

Still in the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights, it is stated that this Presidential Regulation will come into effect after six months from the date of promulgation. President Jokowi himself signed Presidential Decree 32 of 2024 on January 20 2024.
