Oriol Romeu, 31, becomes Barcelona’s third signing for next season, joining Inigo Martinez from Athletic Bilbao and Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City.

“Player Oriol Romeu has reached a transfer agreement with FC Barcelona and Girona FC,” wrote the club’s official statement on Wednesday (18/9/2023).

This transfer marked Romeu’s second return to the Blaugrana having previously joined the La Liga champions last season, where he joined as part of squad youth team in 2004.

Romeu’s youth career at Barcelona continues to climb, and he has the opportunity to strengthen Barca Atletic (Barcelona B) under coach Luis Enrique.

After his fine form with the Barcelona youth team, Romeu earned his first-team debut in the Supercopa de Espana against Sevilla in August 2010, when the team was coached by Pep Guardiola. In the same season, he also made his debut in the Spanish League in a match against Deportivo de La Coruna in May 2011, as reported by Transfermarkt.

During his seven years defending Barcelona, ​​Romeu won two trophies, namely the 2010/2011 Spanish League and the 2010/2011 Supercopa de Espana.

After that, Romeu’s football career continued in the Premier League when he was brought in by Chelsea in August 2011.

Experience playing in Valencia and Stuttgart helped Romeu to get more minutes, and in August 2015, Southampton signed him.

At 1.83 meters tall, Romeu spent seven years with the Saint Mary’s Stadium club, during which he made 256 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and six assists.

His brilliant performance with Southampton occurred in his inaugural season, namely 2015/2016, where he helped his club finish sixth in the Premier League with 63 points. In that season, Romeu appeared 36 times and scored one goal.

In September 2022, Romeu returned to the Spanish League when Girona signed him. With Girona, Romeu appeared in 34 matches in all competitions, scored two goals, and helped the club finish in 10th place with 49 points.
