Man City vs Leeds, Guardiola Angry Gundogan Failed to Score a Penalty Goal

– Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola, expressed his anger at Ilkay Gundogan’s failure to score a goal from the penalty spot when beating Leeds United, 2-1, Saturday (6/5/2023), at the Etihad Stadium.

The German player scored two goals in the first half. He will score a hat trick if he succeeds in becoming the executioner of this penalty.

In the 84th minute, Gundogan had a golden opportunity to increase Man City’s lead to 3-0. However, the player from Germany failed to carry out his duties as the executioner of this shot from 11 meters. Man City’s main penalty taker is actually Erling Haaland. But the Norwegian striker gave Gundogan a chance.

After Gundogan’s missed penalty, Guardiola said to Haaland, “You should have taken it (the penalty).”

One minute after Gundogan’s failure, Leeds then managed to close behind. They received a penalty which Rodrigo did not waste.

Gundogan told reporters, “First he (Guardiola) showed Erling he was quite angry about it, and then he also attacked me. That’s what happened, in the end. When Erling took the ball, I was shocked.” sure he would take it but he let me take it.

‌”I checked a few times to make sure he was sure. He just kept giving me the ball, and I was confident to score,” said Gundogan.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan failed to score from the penalty spot against Leeds United.

‌”We should have scored the third goal. Sometimes they counterattacked and scored. But we handled it well enough and deserved the three points,” Gundogan said again.

This 2-1 victory left City four points ahead of Arsenal with only four Premier League matches remaining. Arsenal can close the gap by winning at St James Park on Sunday, but that will be difficult given Newcastle’s form. Eddie Howe’s squad is in third place in the standings.

In his post-match press conference, Guardiola insisted the penalty should have been taken by Haaland. “The game isn’t over yet. That shows how good and generous Erling is. If it’s 4-0 with 10 minutes left, okay. But at 2-0? Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he’s got to take it. If Gundo manages to score from penalty, everyone will say ‘OK, hat-trick, well done’,” said Guardiola.

‌”But executors are executors. Erling is a specialist. At 2-0 it was business, not a situation we can’t get over. Before the last minute we played an excellent game but maybe we weren’t as clinical as we should have been.”

Guardiola also has to prepare for the FA Cup final, when his side face local rivals Manchester United at Wembley on June 3. Erik ten Hag’s team will be desperate to win to stop City from grabbing treble Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
