Mourinho in tears after winning Conference League with Roma – José Mourinho burst into tears after he had won the Conference League with AS Roma at the expense of Feyenoord on Wednesday. For the Italian subtopper, it is the first European grand prize in history.

“This was not work tonight, but history,” said a visibly emotional Mourinho afterwards against Sky Italia. “We had to make history and we did. I’m sure I’ll stay at this club, I have no doubts about that.”

AS Roma decided the final against Feyenoord thanks to a goal by Nicolò Zaniolo. The number six of the Italian Serie A came away well after halftime because Feyenoord hit the post twice, but remained standing.

“There are so many things going through my head now,” Mourinho said. “So many things at the same time. I’ve been with Roma for eleven months now. I realized when I came what this club means to the people. They had to wait a very long time for this.”

For Mourinho, it is his 26th prize in total and his fifth European top prize. With FC Porto he won the UEFA Cup (2003) and the Champions League (2004), with Internazionale the Champions League (2010) and with Manchester United the Europa League (2017).

Just when Mourinho wanted to tell his press conference what winning the Conference League meant to him, the players entered the press room and sprayed the Portuguese with cans of beer. Mourinho sang and then jumped with the players and then left the press conference.

Mourinho full of praise for Feyenoord

Just before that, Mourinho had complimented Feyenoord for the displayed game in the final. “We struggled in the second half,” he said. “Feyenoord played well and got us into trouble.”

“They played the second half in a different way and forced us to do it differently. I would like to congratulate Feyenoord. They have played more than fifty games this season and have played well from the first game, with a brilliant semi-final in particular. Like us, they have a good team. They have given this new tournament a name.”

Mourinho was especially disappointed that he could not give his players time off now that the season with AS Roma is over. “It is a pity that they now have to play matches for their country.
