Officially Handle Chelsea, This Is What Mauricio Pochettino Will Do

– Chelsea’s new coach Mauricio Pochettino reminded that The Blues must move faster in order to improve the poor performance of last season.

He also warned that the club must move quickly from their disastrous season last term as there is no tolerance for tardiness in football.

In the first 12 months of consortium ownership under Todd Boehly, Chelsea recorded their lowest Premier League finish in 29 years and scored fewer league goals than in any season since 1924.

Pochettino, whose appointment was confirmed just over a month ago, officially started work at Cobham on Monday. He faces an uphill task to take part in a season which saw two managers sacked and over £600 million spent in a far-fetched achievement.

Work has begun on slimming player numbers and shrinking the wage bill with Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante among the nine first-team players to leave since the transfer window reopened.

Pochettino promised more movement in the transfer market and said he would take on more of a signing role now that he had officially started work, although joint sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart would continue to lead the process.

Chelsea will kick off their competitive action this season by playing the big match against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on 13 August. The Argentinian said he and his players should not expect to be given a transitional period to recover from their last season.

“Every season, not only the players but also the staff and the people and the fans have the capacity to move fast,” said Pochettino. “In football, you have to move fast. If you don’t, you die,” said the former Tottenham Hotspur coach.

“Certainly what I discovered from day one–and it’s true that squad not yet squad intact– but the cast was so open, the attitude was incredible. Of course we have quality and we will add more quality. I am very happy to be here, and of course I don’t think about what happened in the past,” Pochettino added.

“The past isn’t that far away but I think when you finish the season you have to move on and try to think about the future.”

Last season, Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter have been dropped after just a few months each in charge.

“In football, (there is no) patience,” he said. “It’s hard to wait. At Chelsea it’s not about asking for time. You have to do it from day one.”

“That’s why we are now working at the training ground. This is not to waste time. This is to be delivered from now on, to give the best, to serve the team. Football is about today or yesterday, you can’t talk too much in the long term.”

“You can’t say to people ‘we need six months to make something’. It is not good. We need to create belief from the start. I think we will have squad that can deliver results in the short term and deliver what we expect.”

“From day one we have to think about winning. If we don’t win, little by little we need more time to develop our ideas,” said Pochettino, who also helped Paris Saint Germain win the French League in the 2021-22 season.

“We have to be ready in the first Premier League game to beat Liverpool.”

He added that an understanding was reached from the first conversation with the hierarchy about what was expected of him in the role.

“The first conversation was with Paul and Lawrence, via Zoom. I said, ‘I need to know if I need to convince you or you need to convince me’.”

“They are very honest with me. They show the plan. All the good and not so good things that need to happen before July 1st, and after. I listened at that time,” said Pocchettino again.

“Then I spoke to the owner in a very good way. They are smart people, football is about being smart and learning from the past and experiences. I’m fine.”

“I’m not a coach who needs to ask for power. I didn’t ask for a clause in my contract that I need to do this or that. I need to show (the owners) and the players and fans that they can trust me and my decisions.”
