The away win over Vietnam in Hanoi felt very special because it was the first win in almost 20 years. The last time the Indonesian national team won in the group stage of the 2004 Tiger Cup or now called the AFF Cup was on December 11 2004.

PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir said that the victory was not just three points, but also a historic victory because the Indonesian national team had not been able to win at home to Vietnam for almost 20 years.

“The last time we won in Vietnam was during the AFF Cup, which was still called the Tiger Cup, in 2004. This is proof of changes both in terms of quality and mental competition which has experienced a significant improvement,” said Erick Thohir.

In the remaining two final qualifying matches for Group F for the 2026 World Cup in the Asian zone, Indonesia will have an advantage because it will play home matches when it hosts Iraq and the Philippines in June.

Indonesia only needs one win to accompany Iraq to qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup which will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico and automatically qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup without qualifying.

“There are still two final matches, a life and death match for us to qualify. Stay focused on achieving the best results in the next two matches,” said Erick.
