Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda have been divorced for over a year, but still work together. Earlier this month, the Microsoft founder announced that they will continue their joint foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for at least another 25 years. In 27 years, they have experienced a lot together, both in the workplace and in their private lives.

In May of last year, Bill and Melinda Gates announced that they would be separating after 27 years of marriage. “We raised three amazing children and founded a foundation that helps people around the world to live healthy and productive lives,” they shared with their followers on Twitter. “We continue to stand behind the purpose of the foundation and both remain involved.”

Shortly after this announcement, The Wall Street Journal revealed that an investigation was underway into a possible affair between the Microsoft founder and a female colleague. The investigation was opened after the woman confessed in 2019 that she had an intimate relationship with the billionaire for years. In an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN, Gates admitted that he has cheated in the past. The affair with his colleague would have started in 2000.

In March 2020, he stepped down from microsoft’s board. Gates said at the time that he wanted to spend more time on his foundation and other priorities, such as global health care and the fight against climate change. A Microsoft representative argued that Gates’ departure had nothing to do with the extramarital affair.

Didn’t stay with that one slipper

After confessing the affair, it was rumored that it did not stop at that one slipper. The billionaire is said to have cheated on his wife more than once, although she never said anything about it. When Melinda was asked about it in an interview with CBS Mornings, she held her jaws tightly together. “I think Bill needs to answer that question,” Melinda responded.

In that interview, another sensitive topic also came up: the contact that Bill Gates had with Jeffrey Epstein. “I met Epstein once and I immediately regretted it. He was evil,” she said. She did not want to answer further questions about the relationship between her ex-husband and the convicted sex offender.

The separation between the two was finalized in August 2021. The big question was what would make Melinda out of the marriage. Bill Gates is one of the richest people on earth. Not only because of his software company Microsoft, which he founded together with Paul Allen in 1975, but also because of his investments in (sustainable) companies. According to business magazine Forbes, Melinda received at least 6.3 billion dollars (6.4 billion euros) in shares in various companies after the divorce. She has now sold part of those shares. ‘We are friendly to each other, but we are not friends’

Her husband’s infidelity has hurt Melinda a lot: “Right now we’re friendly with each other, but we’re not friends,” she said in an interview. “Professionally, we have a pleasant relationship and I believe it will continue to be so.”

The billionaire said that the foundation will continue for at least another 25 years, but his ex-wife later corrected him. According to her, the articles of association state that the foundation will exist for twenty years after the death of one of them and therefore may last much longer. Bill Gates is only 66 and the 58-year-old Melinda may also have many years ahead of her.

They no longer form a couple, but in the coming years they will remain one of the most powerful duos on earth.
