Spotify Was Fined IDR 80 Billion in Sweden Because It Was Not Transparent When Using Users’ Personal Data

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Spotify was fined USD 5.4 million or around IDR 80.4 billion by Swedish regulators. platforms stream the music was deemed to violate the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The problem started when advocacy group Noyb, led by privacy campaigner Max Schrems, filed a complaint against Spotify and other big tech companies in 2019.

Reported EngadgetWednesday (14/6/2023), the complaint states that Spotify does not provide clarity regarding the personal data of users that they collect.

The Swedish authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) also expressed the same thing. According to IMY, Spotify does not specify how the company’s use of user personal data.

This lack of transparency makes it difficult for users to understand how their personal data is processed and check whether the process is lawful.

Therefore, IMY considers that Spotify has violated Article 12 (1) GDPR. While regulators consider the matter to be of low seriousness, the fine is determined based on these factors, as well as Spotify’s revenue and number of users.

For information, IMY has determined that the information in the privacy notice must be designed in such a way that the purpose of the access rights is fulfilled. The information must also be provided in a manner that meets transparency requirements.

Based on its findings, Spotify said it did not take adequate measures to ensure that users understand the description of data processing in non-technical and file terms logs technical because it only provides information in English.
