Steal Victim’s Crypto Funds, Hackers Breach AT&T Email Accounts

Previously, Kaspersky urged people to be more careful when storing their passwords. Revealed, 14 percent of investors have not made any effort to do so.

A study conducted by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky determined that about a third of US crypto investors have some of their savings stolen by hackers.

Launching Cryptopotato, Monday (27/3/2023), criminals usually deceive victims by luring them into entering fake websites or urging them to join dubious investment platforms.

Kaspersky conducted a survey of 2,000 American adults to estimate that about 30 percent of those on the crypto bandwagon have been victims of theft.

The average value of lost assets is nearly USD 100,000, while 15 percent of respondents admit to parting with tokens worth up to USD 1,000,000.

Fraudsters mostly scam individuals via fraudulent websites or fake investment platforms, as the majority of victims are aged 18-24. Only 8 percent of those over the age of 55 had some of their assets siphoned off for this reason.

It should be noted that older people have not embraced asset classes the way young people have.

In fact, 36 percent of participants aged 25-44 admitted to owning some cryptocurrency, while only 10 percent of those aged 55+ were HODLers.

Senior Security Researcher in Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analytics Team Marc Rivero claims that the lack of comprehensive regulation has recently fueled an increase in cryptocurrency fraud.

He advises people to be very careful when investing in asset classes and to use sophisticated passwords to secure their funds.

“Users should be extremely careful where they invest their money, keeping an eye out for phishing scams and fake websites. They should use the additional security measures available to them, such as multi-factor authentication, and should use strong, unique passwords. on all accounts,” he said.
