AI Experts Decide Withdraw from Google, Remind About the Dangers of Artificial Intelligence

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – AI Expert (artificial intelligence/artificial intelligence) who is dubbed as one of the “Godfathers of AI”, Geoffrey Hinton, decided to quit Google.

The 2018 Turing Award winner also said part of him regretted his life’s work.

To The New York Timesthe 75-year-old said he also quit Google to be more able to speak freely about the risks and dangers of AI.

“I console myself with the usual excuse: If I don’t do it, someone else will,” said Hinton, as quoted from The VergesThursday (4/5/2023).

“It’s hard to see how you can prevent bad actors from using it for bad things,” said the man who has worked at Google for more than a decade.

Geoffrey Hinton notified Google of his retirement last month. He has also spoken to CEO Sundar Pichai, although the details of their talks were not disclosed.

Hinton joined Google after it acquired a company run by Hinton and two of his students, one of whom later became chief scientist at artificial intelligence company OpenAI.

Hinton and his students also developed self-learning neural networks to identify common objects such as dogs, cats and flowers after analyzing thousands of photographs.

It was this work that ultimately led to the creation of ChatGPT and Google Bard.

In his interview, Hinton said he was happy with Google’s management of technology, until Microsoft launched Bing with AI OpenAI, challenging its core business and triggering the company’s “code red”.

Google continues to improve their artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. One of the uses of AI is to be able to provide better answers when internet users search on Google Search.
