Apple Ready to Challenge OpenAI's ChatGPT with ReALM Language Model

The European Union's DMA (Digital Market Act) regulations are known to be targeting Apple again. The European Union asked Apple to allow iPhone users to delete built-in apps that previously couldn't be deleted.

This step is said to be the impact of the European Union's DMA policy which encourages an open and competitive application ecosystem.

As quoted from Gizmochina, Friday (5/4/2024), European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager said Apple should allow users to delete any application, including system-level applications such as Photos.

Even though it sounds simple, this request has sparked debate. The reason is, default applications such as Photos are deeply integrated with iOS.

Vestager said Apple should allow third-party apps to act as image libraries within the system.

However, a number of parties said that this would be difficult to do, because the system is relatively complex. If this is done, they predict there will need to be a significant overhaul of the iPhone system.

On the other hand, Apple itself has made several changes to comply with DMA. One of them is offering alternative app store options.

However, the European Commission feels this is still not enough. They think that Apple still doesn't want to comply with the rules regarding third-party applications.

On the other hand, although the European Union is pushing for a more open ecosystem, there are concerns about the potential impact on user experience and data security.
