Bali Cancels 2023 World Beach Games, Menpora Reveals Polemics About Budget

– The appointment of Indonesia (Bali) as host for the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games occurred after the deadline for determining the 2023 budget was carried out. This was conveyed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo when confirmed by journalists on Friday (7/7/2023).

“When I became (Menpora) we saw that our appointment as the host of the AWBG happened suddenly in November 2022 and the discussions for the 2023 budget had been closed,” said Dito when confirmed by journalists on Friday (7/7/2023).

Dito said discussions on the 2023 budget would be carried out no later than August. Meanwhile, the appointment of Indonesia (Bali) as the host was carried out in November or 3 months after the 2023 budget procurement deadline.

Dito added that a discussion meeting on the holding of the AWBG 2023 with the President would only be held in January 2023. He stated the government’s commitment to always try its best at every event, especially at international level which will be held in Indonesia.

The cancellation of Indonesia as the host was said to have been carried out after information from the Ministry of Finance regarding budgetary capabilities that did not match the expectations submitted by the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). Dito said that Bali’s withdrawal from hosting the 2023 AWBG was decided by the National Olympic Committee a month before the event.

“The NOC organizers think that with the tight time, this should happen on August 5, where it’s already July. They want to protect Indonesia’s value, so within a month, the organizers decide it’s better to cancel it,” said Dito.

As is known, Indonesia will previously host the ANOC World Beach Games 2023 which is planned to be held in Bali on 5-12 August 2023. The event is planned to be attended by 130 countries who will compete in several water and beach sports.
