Bringing Home SEA Games Gold, Member of Commission X DPR Praises Young Garuda Mentality

– The Indonesian U-22 men’s soccer national team (Timnas) has successfully brought home gold at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. Commission X DPR RI also congratulates the success of the nation’s best sons after 32 years of waiting.

“Fantastic, dramatic, extraordinary thumbs up, that is the expression we should give to the young Garuda, the U-22 national team who won gold,” said Member of Commission X DPR RI, Andreas Hugo Pareira to journalists, Thursday (18/5/2023) .

In the final match at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Phen, Cambodia, the Indonesian U-22 national team managed to defeat Thailand in a dramatic way. Indra Sjafri’s squad had to draw in 90 minutes of normal time with an equal score of 2-2.

It was only in the extra time round, Indonesia was able to confirm the champion with a final score of 5-2. This is the first gold medal from the sport of football after the 1991 edition of the SEA Games. The 32-year wait of Indonesian football fans has finally been rewarded, with the fighting spirit of the young Garudas.

Moreover, according to Andreas, Team Garuda managed to beat a team from a country that has been the ‘scourge’ of Indonesian football.

“The unyielding mentality of fighting is proof that we can beat the two teams that in recent years have become frightening ‘monsters’ for Indonesia. Vietnam in the semifinals and Thailand in the final,” said the legislator from the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) I electoral district.

Andreas also gave his appreciation to the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI). According to him, it is necessary to have a person who has the spirit of hard work and is consistent in developing sports, especially football in the country, so that they continue to gain achievements.

“Hopefully, the good start from Erick Thohir’s leadership at PSSI together with a team of coaches who are cohesive in both Indra Syafri and Shin Tae Yong’s circle will break the deadlock in Indonesian football achievements,” said Andreas.
