Focus on Strengthening the Squad, Barcelona Delay Xavi’s New Contract

– Barcelona president, Joan Laporta said that talks on a new contract for coach Xavi are on hold.

Laporta emphasized that the club’s current priority is strengthening Xavi’s squad.

“The priority right now is to build the team, improve it as much as possible, and when we can get a moment of calm we will talk about his contract. He is a coach who understands the circumstances of the club very well, as well as a great coach. There will be no problem in that.” Laporta said.

Currently, Barcelona has lost a number of its pillar players, including Sergi Busquets. Regarding his replacement, Laporta admitted that he could not find a replacement at a high price.

Xavi has announced that he hopes to buy a defensive midfielder to replace his former captain.

But Laporta understands Xavi’s wishes. “He understands the club’s situation. He wants to strengthen the midfield, but he knows that some options are not possible and we could be wrong,” he said.

One of the options that Laporta is considering is looking at the development of young players in the academy.

“We will cut the development of the junior players. We have Marc Casado, Pau Prim, Gerard Hernández or Marc Bernal. You have to look at home first of all,” he added.
