Google Sues 2 Chinese Citizens Regarding Crypto Application Fraud Allegations

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Technology giant Google filed a lawsuit against two Chinese citizens in the Southern District of New York, alleging they used the Google Play Store to defraud more than 100,000 users worldwide through a crypto investment application.

Launch News. BitcoinFriday (5/4/2024) the lawsuit alleges that Yunfeng Sun (aka Alphonse Sun) and Hongnam Cheung (aka Zhang Hongnim or Stanford Fischer) ran this fraud scheme since at least 2019.

“(They allegedly made) several false statements to Google to upload their fake applications to Google Play, but not limited to false statements about the identity, location, and type and nature of the applications uploaded,” according to the plaintiff's statement.

“This is a unique opportunity for us to use our resources to really combat bad actors who are running extensive crypto schemes to defraud some of our users,” said Halimah DeLaine Prado, general counsel at Google.

In 2023 alone, Halimah revealed, her party discovered more than one billion dollars in crypto fraud and scams in the United States.

“This (lawsuit) allows us to not only use our resources to protect users, but also serves as a precedent for future criminals that we will not tolerate,” he said.

The lawsuit accuses Sun, Cheung and their associates of designing the app to appear legitimate.

Users then see their balance and expected return in the app, but are ultimately unable to withdraw their investment or claim profits.
