Juventus Mute Atalanta, Vlahovic Gets Racial Insults from Supporters

– Juventus rose to second place in Serie A Italian League after winning 2-0 over Atalanta, Sunday (7/5/2023). The match was marred by racial abuse by Atalanta fans towards Juve’s goalscorer, Dusan Vlahovic.

Juventus opened the scoring with a goal scored by Samuel Iling-Junior in the 55th minute in their first game in Serie A. The Turin club doubled their advantage through Vlahovic’s goal at the end of the game. This is Vlahovic’s 10th goal.

The Serbian striker then poked fun at some of the home fans after previously being taunted as a “gypsy”, an insult that led to the game being briefly stopped by referee Daniele Doveri.

The Italian word gypsy is often used by some groups of football fans as a derogatory term for players from the Balkans and eastern Europe, regardless of their ethnicity.

“Unfortunately these chants keep happening, they have to be fought. I think we need to ignore them when they happen and let those responsible take action,” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

This victory made Juventus move up to second place in the standings, while Atalanta is in sixth place.

Meanwhile Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini did not take Vlahovic’s incident seriously. He said that there should be a difference between insults aimed at individuals and racists in general.
