Sentenced to be banned from accompanying the team for 10 days, Mourinho is accused of damaging the reputation of the referee

The reason behind the suspension of accompanying the team given to AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho for 10 days has been published. The Portuguese coach was deemed to have “tarnished the reputation of Daniele Chiffi and the refereeing organisation.”

Mourinho has earned several suspensions during his two seasons at the Stadio Olimpico and will start next season also from the stands. He was given a 10-day ban and a €50,000 fine, while Roma were also given the same fine, for his criticism of referee Chiffi after the match against Monza on 3 May 2023.

The reasons behind this decision were made public, explaining why the sentence was so harsh after the peace offer was rejected.

“The statements made by Mourinho to television and other media undoubtedly exceed the limits of acceptable criticism of referee Chiffi and are in open violation of Article 23, paragraph 1 of the code of sporting justice. In his comments, Mourinho has unhesitatingly damaged not only his reputation and the prestige of refereeing Chiffi, including with personal comments, but also the federal refereeing organization, which questions the appointment mechanism in matches,” wrote Serie A as quoted by Football Italia.

After the match, Mourinho called Chiffi “the worst referee I’ve ever met in my career. He was terrible, he had no human relations with anyone, he had no empathy, he gave a red card to a player who slipped due to fatigue in the 96th minute.” .”

“Unfortunately, this is also a sign of Roma’s weakness as a club, because we don’t have the strength of any other club to say that we don’t want these referees,” he added.

With a 10-day ban from the start of the season, this means that Mourinho cannot accompany the team in the first two matches of the 2022/2023 Serie A, against Salernitana and Verona. The coach nicknamed The Special One has only been able to return to accompany Lorenzo Pellegrini et al for the Week 3 match against AC Milan on September 1.
