Asnawi Has Troubled Garnacho, Shin Tae-yong: Thanks to the Team Collectivity

One of the players who stood out in the Indonesia vs Argentina match on FIFA Matchday, Monday (19/6/2023) was the captain of the Indonesian national team, Asnawi Mangkualam. The former PSM Makassar player even bothered young Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho.

Responding to Asnawi’s game, the coach of the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae-yong, said that Asnawi’s stunning game could not be separated from the team’s collective play.

“So it’s not only Asnawi who is good in this match, but because of the good performance of the other friends. Therefore, Asnawi also stands out more,” said Shin Tae-yong in a post-match press conference.

However, the coach from South Korea admitted that Asnawi did indeed play well in Indonesia’s match against the 2022 world champion.

“Asnawi really worked hard to the maximum until the end. So it deserves praise,” said Shin Tae-yong.

In the match that was held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Garnacho took to the field in the 60th minute to replace the Fiorentina striker, Nicolas Gonzalez. For 90 minutes, Asnawi, who played on the right side of Indonesia’s defense, was often involved in duels with Argentine stars. One of the stunning actions was when Asnawi stopped Garnacho with his successful tackle.

Indonesia itself lost 0-2 to the Tanggo team, who scored goals through Leandro Paredes (38′) and Cristian Romero (55′). At least there were two threats or opportunities for Indonesia which were thwarted by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

First, Elkan Baggott’s header met a throw-in by Pratama Arhan in the second half which the Aston Villa goalkeeper was still able to push over. Apart from Baggott’s header, Emiliano Martinez was surprised by Ivar Jenner’s strike at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, the ball can still be driven away by the Aston Villa goalkeeper.

Even though they lost, Shin Tae-yong still appreciated Garuda for showing good fighting spirit and mentality against Argentina.

“Indeed, the Argentine team played very well, but mentally the Indonesian players were not far behind,” said the coach from South Korea.
