Google Halts Development of Iris Augmented Reality Glasses Project

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Google has decided to discontinue the glasses project augmented reality (AR) internally known as the Iris project. This choice was taken by the company to focus on AR software development.

Quoted from The Verges, Monday (3/7/2023), this stop will also have an impact on the transcription and navigation features in glasses which are said to be publicly tested.

Although it has been in the works for years, this stoppage comes following a wave of layoffs and company reshuffles that have occurred in recent months.

Another reason that may have influenced the decision was the departure of Clay Bavor, former head of Google’s Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Clay’s departure was called because he wanted to form a startups with Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor.

Reported Engadgetthis led to Google constantly changing its strategy for Iris glasses, much to the confusion and frustration of the project team members.

Previously, it was reported that this device could launch in 2024 with an initial version resembling the Focals product from a Canadian company, North, which Google has acquired.

Google also briefly released a demonstration video of its latest version showing the AR translation feature in action real-time. Unfortunately, the Iris glasses will no longer be in development, after four months of being left by the head of the project.

Despite failing to build AR hardware, Business Insider stated that Google is still ambitious in developing augmented reality the greater one.
