58 Chessers Ready to Compete in the Asian Championship Zone 3.3

– As many as 58 world chess players from nine countries will participate in an international chess tournament titled Asian Zone 3.3 Open & Women Chess Championship 2023″ on 5-13 May 2023 at Hotel Century Park, Senayan, Jakarta.

The President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Zone 3.3 Asia who is also the Chairman of PB Percasi, GM Utut Adianto feels proud that Indonesia is again able to hold a prestigious chess tournament like this.

Last year, Indonesia held the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Bali, and was awarded the 2022 Event of the Year at the 2023 Asian Chess Summit last March in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“So far, Indonesia has always been an extraordinary host, because it is able to provide the best. And, I hope that this tournament will not only shine because of its holding, but also produce players who will make Zone 3.3 a force to be reckoned with on a global scale,” Utut said in a press conference at Senayan Jakarta, Wednesday (3/5/2023) ).

This tournament is very important because it is through this championship that the chess players in Zone 3.3 will compete for tickets to the 2023 Chess World Cup which will be held in July-August 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“There are three tickets available to compete in the World Cup. Two tickets for the winner and runner-up in the Open (men’s) group and one ticket for the winner in the Women’s (women’s) group,” said the Chairperson of the Asian Zone 3.3 Committee Open & Women Chess Championship 2023, Dr. Dwi Hatmisari Ambarukmi (dr. Poeng).

There were 58 participants from 9 countries namely Malaysia, Thailand, Mongolia, Singapore, Taipei, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

As the host, Indonesia fielded a team with the most players of 20 chess players consisting of 12 male chess players and 8 female chess players. While Vietnam was in second place with 15 chess players (6 boys and 9 girls), followed by Mongolia which sent 9 players (6 boys and 3 girls).

The Asian Zone 3.3 Open & Women Chess Championship 2023 uses a Swiss system of 9 rounds, and applies strict regulations according to international chess tournaments in general. Not only that, this championship is also very prestigious because it provides prizes of 9,000 USD for the Open (men’s) category and 6,000 USD for the Women’s (women’s) category.

It is known, Asia 3.3 zone consists of 17 FIDE member countries, namely ASEAN countries (Brunai Darussalam, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam) plus Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Mongolia and Taiwan.
