After Vinicius Junior’s Racism, the Spanish Football Federation Fires 6 VAR Referees

– The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Referee Technical Committee have reportedly sacked six VAR referees following allegations of racist abuse towards Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian initially got into a violent confrontation with a Valencia supporter, who allegedly racially abused him from the stands.

Vinicius was then shown a red card for slapping Hugo Duro after being treated harshly by the Valencia player, prompting ironic booing from the home fans.

After the incident, Vinicius took to his social media to post a statement condemning the actions of the supporters, and the lack of action from La Liga.

But now the RFEF and the technical refereeing commission have taken action, sacking six La Liga officials, including Iglesias Villanueva, who was in charge of VAR during Real Madrid’s loss to Valencia.

The dismissal was based on a picture given to referee De Burgos Bengoechea on the field which resulted in Vinicus Junior’s incomplete red card.

“They could find no reason why the footage submitted only referred to the Brazilian’s punch to the face of Hugo Duro and not to the entire game,” the statement read.

Meanwhile Real Madrid also issued a statement regarding Sunday’s incident, which read, “Real Madrid CF strongly condemns the incident that occurred yesterday against our player, Vinícius Junior. These incidents are a direct attack on the democratic and social model of coexistence in Our country is based on law.

“Real Madrid believes that such attacks also constitute hate crimes, and therefore have submitted an appropriate report to the General Prosecutor’s Office, in particular to the Prosecutor’s Office against hate crimes and discrimination. This is so that the facts can be investigated and those who have responsible can be held accountable.”
