Cybercrime is on the rise, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on the basis of the 2021 Safety Monitor. The same report shows that young people are more often than older people victims of cybercrime, such as identity fraud, buying and selling fraud and hacking.

1. Recognize phishing and help desk fraud

Of all Dutch people aged 15 years or older, 68 percent say that in 2021 they will have received at least once a phone call, e-mail or other message that was (probably) from a scammer.

According to the Dutch Payments Association, in the first half of 2021 alone, the damage caused by phishing and bank help desk fraud was more than 22.5 million euros. Behind helpdesk fraud is often an entire organization. Criminals pretend to be employees of the bank, for example. The techniques they use for this are getting better and better. Do not open attachments or click on a link if you are in doubt. And never just give personal information. Are you in doubt? Then contact the organization with whom you (supposedly) have contact to verify the incident.

2. Change your passwords

As a first defense against online crime, strong passwords apply to protect your online accounts. It is advisable to set a unique and strong password for each account. Easy passwords are easy to crack, making it easy for cybercriminals to get hold of your money or data. Have you found a strong password? Even then it is wise to change it occasionally. If necessary, use a password management tool for this.

3. Keep private private with VPN
